Many people ask us about the difference between an American Pale Ale and an India Pale Ale.

The primary difference between an India Pale Ale (IPA) and an American Pale Ale (APA) is that the IPA has more hops (translates to more bitterness) and alcohol.  The most common theory about the origin of the IPA is that the British were sending Pale Ale’s to their troops in India and the Pale Ale was not able to survive the voyage without spoiling.  The  brewers started adding more hops, since hops are a natural antiseptic.  They also increased the alcohol content.   By doing this, the British were able to develop a type of Pale Ale they could ship to their troops in India without spoling during the long voyage.

Did you know?

Who knew that a homebrew shop had something for everyone, even if you don’t make your own beer or wine?  We have enjoyed seeing the many unique uses for our more than 800 different items.  For example, we have a great selection of brushes in unusual sizes and shapes – we have sold these for cleaning vases.  We ‘ve sold beer yeast for making pizza dough, dry malt extract for baking and for belgian waffles, ascorbic acid for pitting silver to make jewelry, grains for making soup and fruit purees to make fruit reductions.  Let us know what other unusual uses you find for our products (keep it clean!) and feel free to share great recipes made with wine/beer ingredients.
